*Indian Team Captain Harmanpreet Singh, Vice Captain Hardik Singh, Mandeep Singh, Manpreet Singh, Jarmanpreet Singh and many more Current & former players to exhibit their skill* Jalandhar, Oct. 22 : The stage is set for the nation's prestigious 42nd IndianOil SERVO Surjit Hockey Tournament, which begins here today at local Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium, Burlton Park. Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal, IAS, Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar, who is also the President of the Surjit Hockey Society said that the annual tournament by the society honors the legacy of the late Olympian Sardar Surjit Singh Randhawa, former captain of the Indian Hockey Team, who tragically passed away in 1984 while tirelessly advocating for the sport's development in India. Indian Team Captain Olympian Harmanpreet Singh, Vice Captain Olympian Hardik Singh, Mandeep Singh, Manpreet Singh, Jarmanpreet Singh and many more Current & former Indian hockey players to exhibit their skill in this 10 days long hockey bonanza. As in the past 36 years, this year also, the Asia’s largest and leading Maharatna Oil Company IndianOil Corporation Limited will be the Main Title sponsor of the tournament while Gakhal Group of USA, AGI Infra, Jalandhar, CT Group of Institutions, Paltex Parmeshwari Silk Mills, Ludhiana ALFA Hockey will be the co-sponsors of the tournament, Dr. Himanshu added. He also informed that the tournament committee is expected to attract Hockey followers in large number as this year also the spectators who come to witness the Hockey matches and the players/officials who will participate in this tournament will get Alto car, Refrigerator and LCDs as prize on the final day. The Alto is sponsored by NRI Satnam Singh 'Satta Bhalwan' of USA, Dr. Himanshu added. Iqbal Singh Sandhu, CEO of the Society said that the 42nd edition of the tournament will be played on league-cum-knockout basis. All the 12 teams have been divided into 4 pools. Last Year's Champion IndianOil Mumbai, Indian Navy Mumbai & RCF Kapurthala have been seeded in pool-’A’, Punjab & Sind Bank New Delhi & Indian Force Delhi placed in pool-’B’, last year’s Runners up Bharat Petroleum Mumbai, BSF Jalandhar & CAG New Delhi have been kept in in pool-’C’ whereas Indian Railways Delhi, Army-XI Delhi & CRPF Delhi have been placed in pool-’D’. The top 2 teams of each pool will qualify for quarter finals. The semifinals & final of the tournament will be on 31st October and 1st November, respectively. All types of arrangements like boarding & lodging, Transport, security, medical etc. have been completed. No gate entry money will be charged from the spectators who will come to witness the game of hockey. Sandhu further informed that the arrangements have been made for the LIVE telecast of both the Semi Finals & Final Match of the tournament on PTC News and PTC Gold Channels on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, respectively. All India Radio, Jalandhar will also relay the 'Ball-to-Ball' running commentary of the final match. There will a colourful cultural programme of the final day of the tournament where famous punjabi crowed puller folk singer Gulab Sidhu will perform Live to entertain the spectators, before the start of the final match on Nov. 1 from 5.00 pm onwards. A full-fledged media centre has also been set up for the convenience of the print and electronic media, Sandhu added. Dr. Ashok Mittal, Member Parliament (Rajya Sabha) & Founder Chancellor, LPU will inaugurate the tournament, Mr. Yashpal Kant, CGM (Ops), IndianOil will be Guest of Honour and Mr. Nitin Kohli, President, Hockey Punjab & AAP Halka Incharge (Jalandhar Central) will be the special guest during the opening ceremony. Today's Match; 1. Army-XI Delhi vs. CRPF Delhi : 4:30 pm. 2. Punjab & Sind Bank Delhi Vs. Punjab Police: 6.00 pm.
